Basketball Bungalow
Bennett Residence - Berkeley, CA

SUMMARY: This Berkeley bungalow was bought by a family of UC Berkeley alumni for their son, also a student at UCB. Designed around hosting groups of his fellow wheelchair basketball team members, it integrates many subtle but critical features into a major kitchen and bath remodel and deck addition.

The kitchen has ample roll-under countertops and pull-out work surfaces, but storage is still ample thanks to roll-out shelving, a full-extension pantry cabinet, and eye-level cabinets with pull-down shelving units (photo above). Cabinet-mounted switches give convenient to control to otherwise out-of-reach range hood controls.

The bathroom features hand-made tiles that add an appropriate period touch to the Arts-and-Crafts home. In addition to being large enough to roll into, the shower also has a comfortable seat. A tilting mirror and a medicine cabinet mounted low are great for wheelchair riders.
